To Wash, Or Not To Wash...

· · Comments
Many think prewashing fabric is unnessary, although when it comes down to it taking the chance of letting your fabric shrink after making a complete garmet is risky.
One of the most important factors that comes into play is your fabrics content. Knowing the content of your fabric and the characteristics of it after wash is vital in making your laundering decision.
1: Organic Cotton, Bamboo, Hemp, Lyocell
These fabrics are known to shrink after wash, if you want to avoid upset after the finished garmet is laundered it is best to prewash.
Personally I do a hot wash and tumble try before sewing. I then follow through with garmet care instructions stating to wash on cold, and hang or tumble dry.
2: Merino Wool
Depending on your products purpose and laundering needs wether or not to wash Simplifi's Merino Wool varies. If you are sewing childrens apparel (longies, toques, mitts) it is best to felt your wool gently by washing on warm or hot and tumble dry on hot for roughly 10 minutes until you notice the fibers shrink by about 10%. Follow through with hanging to dry.
3: Linen and Muslin
Linen and Muslin tend to soften once washed, as well as shrink. If your finished product is to be laundered it is suggested to prewash!
4: Recycled Polyester
Although Polyester is said not to shrink it does not hurt to prewash fabric even though the Fabric at Simplifi is milled at ecoconcious facilities.
